BANDWIDTH UTILITY

Data Transfer Calculator

Calculate how many Gigabytes or Terabytes of data can be transferred over a given period, or how long a target data volume takes to move.

Quick Calculation: Calculate total data transfer volumes over hours, days, or months. At typical speeds, calculations account for TCP packet framing, Wi-Fi contention, and server delivery caps.

How Download Time Is Calculated

Total Transfer = Sustained Bitrate × Seconds Elapsed / 8

Determines the cumulative volume in Megabytes, Gigabytes, or Terabytes across any defined timeframe.

Step 1

Convert to Bits

Multiply file size in Bytes by 8 to get total bits: 500 GB × 8,000,000,000 bits

Step 2

Apply Speed & Overhead

Multiply network speed by real-world efficiency (typically 90% due to TCP/IP packet headers): 100 Mbps × 0.90

Step 3

Divide to Find Duration

Divide total bits by effective throughput: 13 min 20 sec (theoretical) / 14 min 49 sec (with 90% real-world efficiency)

Mbps (Megabit per second)Used by ISPs and Speedtests. Lowercase 'b'. 1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bits/s.
vs
MB/s (Megabyte per second)Used by Steam, Chrome, Windows. Uppercase 'B'. 1 MB/s = 8,000,000 bits/s.
